Salon: Power Up Your Barbering Skills

The barbering culture is booming and has been reinvented, so to speak over the last few years. Companies like Reuzel, American Crew and Redken are campaigning and educating for men's cuts a lot more. Kevin Murphy has created an entire cutting class series and a new men's line to meet the demands. 18.21 out of Texas was created due to the need for an exclusively men’s line. There is a much higher need for more education and for a great reason: Men’s haircuts are an important piece of the puzzle.

One great thing about men's cuts is, they do not take a long time. That being said, if you have the proper space for it you can double book your men's cuts with your color services. If you are not set up for that, no big deal. You know those half hour slots in your day that you haven’t filled, well now you can fill them!

Let’s take a look at the money aspect. We will say Anna charges $60 for a women's haircut and $40 for men’s haircuts. Anna takes one hour to do a women’s haircut and a half hour to do a men’s haircut. Now do the math. $60 an hour or $80 with 2 men’s cuts. That is a no brainer! So hone those barbering skills and advertise like crazy. It is time to get moving and shaking on those fades.

Where to get started:

Pro Tip: Make time for a scalp massage before you go to the shampoo bowl. It will set you apart from your compeition. Make your own scalp massage potion using Jojoba oil and essential oils of your choice. I use atlas cedar wood, rosemary and lavender. I prefer that mix because it is calming but still masculine enough that men will not be offended by the scent.
